Too Many Choices
On December 7th we are attempting our first ever beer swap and meet up. Amber and I have managed to pull together a group called San Antonio Beer Swap and for our first go around we are having 12 or more individuals bring a case of beer. Obviously we want to avoid the big market watered down junk so we set a cost minimum and limit of $35 to $50. This way everyone gets back what they put into it. We really don’t need to swap Bud Light, Paps or Miler stuff so that’s been outlawed too.
You would think with those small rules it would be a fairly easy task but it really wasn’t. There are a few issues that I ran into right away. For one we invited quite a few connoisseurs of beer. This makes your choices very hard because when the people who are participating have drank almost everything you can think of your choices become limited and hard. Just because your neighbor has never heard of a certain beer you drink it does not mean that these folks have not had it.
You are not picking a beer for folks who have a lot of room for sampling. You are picking a beer for a group of people who more than likely have tried almost everything you think of. Taking this into consideration I finally convinced myself that maybe these folks may have already drank what I have chosen but if its good beer they won’t mind. So here goes nothing right?
I stood at specs for nearly 40 minutes debating beers. There are a lot of beers there that I have had and liked but I knew that my friends and fellow beer swappers would be facing the same dilemma. I saw a few that were above my price range and contemplated getting them and saying screw the cost but then I knew the misses would gripe. I can’t set the rules of the swap and be the first to break them can I?
Amber and I settled on The Great Divides Titan IPA. It fit the price range at $10.49 a six pack and the whole case with tax lands between $40 and $50 and we have never had the beer before. I read quite a few reviews and it always scores in the 90s or above 4 so I figure it would make a great first try. Its a good thing we are not ranking all the beers in the exchange because I would be afraid of mine being at the bottom.
The swap is 2.5 weeks away so I am curious and excited to see who will pick what next.
